Santa Catalina Suguaros
The Sonoran Desert is most famous for the Saguaro cactus. This shot was taken on a hike on the west side of the Santa Catalina mountains near Tucson. The sun comes up late here because of the mountains. We were well into our hike as it came over the top and backlit these specimens.

I had traveled throughout the Southwest as a child with my parents, but grew up in the East and later lived in California. When I moved to Colorado in 1988, I began to explore in more detail. Mountain biking in Moab, trips to find rock art through the Southwest, and ultimately buying a second home in the Tucson area has meant lots of time in the desert. I tend to think of our Southwest in terms of Red Rock Country, Canyon Country, and Sonoran Desert Country. Each has its charms.
