The desert is full of small scenes like this. The image was taken near Lake Powell in Arizona. It is dry country except in those places near rivers or small springs.

I had traveled throughout the Southwest as a child with my parents, but grew up in the East and later lived in California. When I moved to Colorado in 1988, I began to explore in more detail. Mountain biking in Moab, trips to find rock art through the Southwest, and ultimately buying a second home in the Tucson area has meant lots of time in the desert. I tend to think of our Southwest in terms of Red Rock Country, Canyon Country, and Sonoran Desert Country. Each has its charms.
